Split on Angelo
Project Outline
Small venue that packs a punch and stands out amongst the established food and beverage heavyweights on a much-loved Angelo Street in South Perth. With a vision to create a welcoming and comfortable space for the local community to get together and engage over their favourite brew. A venue that would aid the growth of café culture and transcend Angelo Street to an end destination.
It sits as a jewel in the new Coles redevelopment, opening to the communal courtyard shaded by an established large tree. It provides its own amenities, outdoor seating, range of low and high indoor seated areas, comfortable lounge area for those quick business coffee meetings, or a quiet space to sit down with a laptop to finish some work, read the newspaper or just watch the world go by.
The soft curvature of the façade has been invited to extend internally in the form of the main curved internal wall. It is carefully positioned and shaped to act as a barrier between the front and the back of house, an organic separator of the transient café zones, creator of the cosy lounge cocoon and concealer of storage and services areas. The play of shapes and volumes of the space extends to the carefully curated list of materials, colours, furniture, fittings, and fixtures. This is designed to be a fun, light, beautiful space where patrons want to return to.
One of the main interior design goals was to pay homage to the client’s Mediterranean heritage. We achieved this though the use of terracotta and salmon hues, Italian travertine, warm timbers, and textural elements reminiscent of European seaside towns. Our “shop stopper,” the beautiful servery in Austral Dream marble is our way of merging the Client’s heritage with the beauty of the West Australian landscape, cementing its importance in the family ties.
We didn’t want to ignore the presence and the visual impact of the venue once the last coffee order has been placed and the doors locked. It was just as important to create a place that stands out in the evening hours as well as it does during daylight. The lighting design and its effects have been just as considered and carefully handpicked as the rest of the elements. It gives this new kid on the block a chance to grow, mature and reinvent itself in an expanded offering in the future.
The fittings were supplied with Casambi Bluetooth drivers to allow for lighting control without having to install a hard-wired DALI system. This enabled the Café to transition into a bar in the evening, giving the tenant the ability to program lighting scenes within the Casambi Bluetooth App to suit both settings.
