The illumination of William St has taken a significant change in appearance since July 2010 after switching from High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixture and light source to the bright BetaLED Edge 80 LED Street light. The lighting upgrade was between the Roe St to Newcastle St intersections. The Edge LED fixture delivers excellent uniformity of light distribution with a significant increase in rendition of colour & detail.
The previous lighting scheme had a colour temperature of 2000K which gives a yellow/orange light that gives a perception of low lighting levels. It also had poor uniformity of light with several hot spots. The Edge LED luminaries have a colour temperature of 6000k which provides a bright white light for better colour rendering and higher even levels of illumination.
The design standard aimed for was Category P2 (AS/NZS 1158.3.1; 2005) which is an average of 3.5 lux. But it achieved an average of 21 lux equivalent to category P6 which is the highest subcategory for pedestrians and vehicle movement areas.
The previous 250W HPS fittings had a total power consumption of 274W per pole. By replacing them with the BetaLED EDGE 80 LED’s at 525mA the total power consumption has been reduced to only 138W per pole. That’s a total energy saving per pole of 136W which is almost half the previous energy consumption.
BetaLED’s Edge street light offers a number of environmental advantages over other types of lighting such as lead-free, mercury-free and meets Restriction of Hazardous Substances regulations. Coupled with its high efficiency driver and thermal management system we are sure to have continuous maintained light levels for many years to come.
