AIA Awards 09'
“Another fantastic year celebrating an ever-increasing level of architecture was showcased at the recent Australian Institute of Architects WA 2009 Architecture Awards at the Burswood Casino Complex. The effects of the economic boom of 2006-2007 was certainly evident in the amount and level of finish of works submitted for the Awards which also attracted the largest contingent of practitioners, academics, students, sponsors, industry and State Government representatives ever catered for in its history.
All categories in the Awards fiercely contended with the ultimate award, the George Temple Pool Award, going to a brilliant composition of apartments in Cottesloe by Blane Brackenridge that explored the expansive views across the Cottesloe beachfront while cleverly integrating private and common areas on a tightly knitted and sloping site. Other Award winners included Casa Guidice by Spaceagency, iZone fit-out by Taylor Robinson Architects and the Swan TAFE Metal Trades Welding Workshop to name a few. The diversity of entries were astounding with several categories enabling the presentation of numerous awards that proved a testament to the skill and talent of the architectural profession in WA.
We thank Mondoluce for their continuing support of the Australian Institute of Architects WA Chapter and the 2009 Architecture Awards and believe that it is only with this generous support from our sponsors that we can continue to grow and develop as the premier building and design profession in Australia."
Kind regards

Fremantle Architects Party 09'
“Fremantle Architects” is an informal group of architects who
either work, live or do both within the Fremantle area. For over
20 years, Fremantle Architects have maintained the tradition
of gathering for a Christmas party, where they maintain old
traditions of camaraderie and mateship, and in more recent times,
give focus to a worthy cause or theme for the year.
This year’s St. Patrick’s Community Support Centre, Fremantle was the worthy
beneficiary of the funds raised or profited at the event. On the
night St. Pat’s was presented with a cheque for $10K which will
provide many services for the homeless and disadvantaged
adults in the South-West region, including support with
accommodation, counselling, food parcels and vouchers,
education, medical services and most importantly providing
hope in chalenging times.
Mondoluce was very willing to support
this very worthy cause as the major sponsor and also provide an
Artemide Tolomeo Classic LED lamp as prize to be raffled during
the evening. Well done to Grounds Kent Architects for organising
such fantasic event, great people, great atmosphere, great venue
and a great cause.

Frankfurt Light Fair 08'
A great opportunity was presented to me by Mondoluce to attend the World Lighting
Affair in Frankfurt in April 2008. This was an extraordinary experience in being exposed
to current design streams and technological directions. A virtual of current lighting
products was on offer, all accesible within a few days of lengthy walking.
The immense size of the fair and vast numbers of both manufactuers and items mean't
strategic approach was required. This did not deter the delightful suprises that were
discovered on route, light fittings that possesed intriguing designs, crafted manufacturing
outcomes or integrated intelligent technologies. Lighting is undergoing a transformation,
one that is responding to the enormity of global warming, the pursuit of light pollution
reductions and the world economic demands. Creativity and design is alive and well in
the lighting industry, albeit still amongst a larger volume of the banal.
It was interesting to hear the 'whispers' around this event that LED technology will
emerge very quickly to become the major lighting source for both internal and
external fittings within a few years. It is also envisaged that interactive intelligent
lighting technologies will become more cost effective and through their proliferation,
provide greater lighting design flexibility and energy conservation.
The demand for lighting through out the world will consistently increase, via the ever
expanding population and the 'churn' evoked through new technologies.
Given this assurance of supply, a significant challenge for the industry, will be the
development of new lighting strategies and delivering new lighting products, that
simultaneously 'make a difference', at all levels from the individual expressive
[my house - my home], all the way through to global realization of meaningful and
effective energy conservation.

Frankfurt Light Fair & Artemide Excursion
In April 2005 Mondoluce organised a lighting excursion to the Frankfurt Light Fair, which was a great experience for a selection of the Mondoluce team and guests. The excursion included a visit to the DZ factory in Frondenberg.
DZ Artemide is the head office for Artemide in Germany as well as the main manufacturing facility and research and development for Artemide’s outdoor lighting products. The excursion also saw the group visit Milan taking in an extensive tour of Artemide’s main manufacturing facility in Pregnana as well as Artemide’s two main showrooms in the heart of Milan. The group was invited to attend an evening event at Campus West End, which was organised by Artemide and was a discussion by leading German architects on light and architecture.
The European excursion was a great opportunity to take in some great sight seeing in Germany and Italy, especially during a 3 hour train trip to Dusseldorf along the River Rhine. The culmination of the excursion was a weekend stay at Lake Como, where once again there was time for some shopping and sight seeing. There was an opportunity for a boat trip on the lake to see some magnificent landscape and villas of celebrities like George Clooney. The group was also taken on a tour of a villa where many movies, such as Star Wars Episode IV and the latest James Bond film were shot.
Mondoluce Is Growing

2006 RAIA WA Chapter Awards
Friday the sixteenth of June 2006 was the night chosen to hold the 2006 RAIA awards for the WA Chapter. Floods of guests dressed in their Friday night best cascaded into the Hyatt Grand ballroom in anticipation for the announcement of the winners of this years awards.
Verity James opened the night in grand style, keeping all the guests entertained and introducing the WA Chapter President Ian Dewar, and The Honorable Margaret Quirk while the anticipation for the announcement of the winners (and delivery of the entrees) escalated. Finally, the tension was ended with the arrival of the delectable entrees and the announcement of the first group of winners. With the list consisting of Cox Howlett + Bailey Woodland and Woodhead International vying for the Public & Institutional award the competition was fierce, putting attendees on the edge of their seats.
After a little more of Verity James, some music, and the main course, the second group of awards were handed out. This group of awards consisted of Hames Sharley and Philip Griffiths Architects battling it out for the Civic Design award and the Mondo Luce Lighting award respectively, not to mention the competition for the coveted George Temple Poole award.
With the presentation of awards over, the end of a fantastic night was in sight, and what better way to end a night of great architecture, than with good food, good music and good company.
Not only was the sixteenth of june the night for the 2006 RAIA awards, it was also the night that alot of hard work came to fruition for the staff at Mondo luce and the WA chapter of the RAIA. Currently in our eighth year of sponsorship of the interiors catergory, 2006 saw the introduction of the Mondo luce lighting award for the creative and innovative use of lighting in architecture. As a company, Mondo luce felt it was time that the intrinsic conection between lighting and architecture be recognised as integral part of the success of any good architectural project.
There was alot of competition within this infant category, with a total of 7 entries. One award and two commendations were presented to the entrants that best used lighting to their advantage to enhance their particular projects. After presenting all the entrants, it was revealed that the award went to Philip and Callum from Philip Griffiths Architects, for the Shenton Park residence, where the team used lighting to add drama and poise to the beautiful home.
The fabulous Artemide Rigel was the award presented to Philip and his team. The Rigel is a perfect cross of form and functionality; not only a light fitting, but a distinctive object of beauty. Comprising of two light sources, the Rigel is infinitely suited to create an ambience of comfort and functionality. Indirect lighting is supplied by a dimmable halogen lamp concealed at the top of the fitting. The presence of Human life energises the colour changing chromatic light which is supplied by 3 pairs of coloured fluorescent tubes, concealed behind a surface that becomes a perfect mirror when the source is off. Control of both light sources is permitted via a touch capacitive keyboard.
Confratulations to the recipients of the two commendations; Joe Chindarsi for his fantastic work on the Winter Cottage, and to Taylor Robinson for the beautiful work done to the Brisbane hotel.
